A lethal dominance that once ruled the screen

This day marks the birth anniversary of an actor who once redefined the screen presence with his striking voice, fearsome looks & intense eyes. India better knows him as the over-ambitious Mogambo in 1987 movie Mr.India & the world knows him for his character of priest (tantrik) Molaram in legendary Steven Spielberg’s hollywood movie “Indiana jones and the temple of doom (1984)”.

An ambitious Pakistani politician in most watched movie of the Indian cinema “Gadar-Ek Prem Katha (2001)” is still as famous as Tara Singh. He was in the character, he didn’t act but just lived that character.

Yeah. He is the Sapera of Main naagin tu sapera. You must have encountered that serpent-charmer of “Nagina (1986)” with long hairs playing harp continuously.

Be it outshining four powerful villains (Pran, Prem Chopra, Danny & Madan puri) of that era in Andha Kanoon (1983) or music lover cruel man in Jackie Shroff’s famous debut movie “Hero (1983)”, even the lead actors struggled to mark their space while sharing screen with him.

“Shahenshah (1988)” was Bachchan’s comeback movie famous for his attire & specially the dialogue “Rishtey mein to hum tumhare baap hote hain, naam hai Shahenshah” but don’t forget the Amrish Puri’s entry scene in which he emerges from a swiming pool & explains the definition of Kanoon to his people. And what about the dialogue which prompted the spike in the sell of Black dog wine;

“Jab bhi gori titliyan dekhta hu na thakur..toh mere man mein hazaron kaale kutte bhonkne lagte hain aur tab main black dog pita hu.”

Who can forget the powerful Balwant Rai of “Ghayal (1990)” & Bhisambhar Nath of “Ram Lakhan (1989)”. Such was the ascendancy of his powerful personality that multi-starers were made just to tackle the juggernaut character played by him. Some of them are:

• Andha Kanoon (1983)” staring Bachchan & Rajini.
• Asli Naqli (1986) staring Shatrughan Sinha & Rajinikanth.
• Tridev (1989) staring Naseeruddin Shah, Sunny deol & Jackie Shroff.
• Maidan-E-Jung staring Dharmendra, Manoj Kumar & Akshay Kunar
• Tahalka (1992) staring Dharmendra, Naseeruddin Shah & Aditya Pancholi.
• Karan Arjun (1995) staring SRK & Salman Khan

Tahalka is widely famous for his look & specially the song “Shom shom shom” that he keeps reciting in the movie.

Bt remembering Amrish Puri only for his villainous characters will be injustice to his versatility & the theatre background from where he came. For example, An aggressive but caring father and jamindar in “Virasat (1997)”, a man of principles in “DDLJ (1995)”, a helpless father &, x-freedom fighter with ‘Tamrapatra” in “Ghatak (1996)”- These close to reality roles played by him defines his versatility.

When it comes to comic timing, he was as good as any other seasoned comedian. Watching him in “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004)” & “Chachi 420 (1997)” still makes us laugh.

Last but not the least, this article will remain incomplete without mentioning the politician of the reality-check political drama “Nayak (2001)” which finds significance even in the modern days. The epic interview scene still gives goosebumps.

प्राचीन नालन्दा विश्वविद्यालय: इतिहास के पन्नों से

बिहार का प्राचीन नालन्दा विश्वविद्यालय कभी पूरे भारत की शान हुआ करता था. 14 हेक्टेयर में फैले इस ज्ञान के महासागर के अंदर शिक्षा का ऐसा दीप प्रज्ज्वलित था जिसके प्रकाश में भारत और पड़ोसी देश ही नही बल्कि यूनान, चीन, रूस और पर्शिया तक के छात्र अध्ययन किया करते थे. आज जहाँ स्कूलों में छात्र-शिक्षक ratio की बात होती है तो ये याद करने लायक है कि नालन्दा विश्वविद्यालय में 10 हजार छात्रों पे 2 हजार शिक्षक थे. कैंपस के अंदर कई तरह की इमारतें थी जो अलग-अलग देशों के राजाओं के दान से बनाई गई थी. इंडोनेशिया के राजा द्वारा बनवाए गए ढांचे का भी प्रमाण मिलता है. शिक्षा के इस महान धरोहर की सबसे बड़ी खासियत थी इसकी library जो कि 90 लाख किताबों का घर हुआ करती थी. जी हाँ, नब्बे लाख. कहते हैं बख्तियार खिलजी ने जब इस library को आग के हवाले किया था तो 3 महीने तक इसमे पड़ी किताबें जलती रही थी.

बख्तियार खिलजी के इस आक्रमण के पीछे की कहानी भी दिलचस्प है. उसे एक ऐसा रोग हो गया था जिसे ठीक करने के लिए बड़े-बड़े चिकित्सक लगाए गए लेकिन सबने हार मान ली. अंत मे एक बौद्ध भिक्षु ने आयुर्वेद की मदद से उसका सफल इलाज किया और यही बात उसे चुभ गई. उसने भारत की महान परम्पराओं के स्रोत को ही मिटाने की ठान ली क्योंकि वो इस बात से हतप्रभ था कि यहाँ के लोग बौद्धिक रूप से इतने सम्पन्न हैं. नालन्दा की library तीन बड़े इमारतों में फैली हुई थी जिसमे एक नौ मंजिले इमारत में सबसे पवित्र पुस्तकें रखी हुई थी. आक्रमण के समय कई हिंदुओं खासकर ब्राह्मणों को मार डाला गया था और कुछ को तो जिंदा ही जला दिया गया था.

तिब्बत के एक लेखक ने जब नालन्दा की बर्बादी के 42 सालों बाद सन 1235 में यहाँ का दौरा किया तो देखा कि तबाही के भयानक मंजर की याद दिलाते खंडहर में एक बूढ़े शिक्षक राहुल श्रीभद्र 70 छात्रों की एक कक्षा चला रहे थे.

गणित, खगोल, आयुर्वेद, योग और अर्थ सहित तमाम विषयों की जानकारी इसके साथ ही लुप्त होती चली गई. आज माहौल अनुरूप है और समय अनुकूल है कि हम फिर से इतिहास के गर्भ में छिपे बेशकीमती चीजों को ढूंढे और उसका लाभ पूरे विश्व को मिले. क्या बिहार का पुराना गौरव वापस आ पाएगा?
